HODGDON,MAINE - Eleanor R. Howard, 95, died Jan. 11, 2012, at a New Jersey health care facility. She was born Feb. 20, 1916, in Springfield, Mass., the daughter of Lynwood and Jennie (Brown) Ross. Eleanor graduated from Colby College in 1937 and received her Master of Science degree in biology from the University of Iowa. Eleanor founded the biology department at Ricker Classical Institute and Ricker College, where she taught for several years until her marriage to Ralph Howard, in 1942. In 1958 she returned to teach biology at Ricker College, receiving an honorary doctorate from that institution in 1974. She was a longtime member of Court Street Baptist Church and sang in Houlton Community Chorus. In addition to her scientific interests, which often led her to dissect frogs and fetal pigs on the kitchen table in preparation for her biology classes at Ricker College, Eleanor loved music, cooking and every kind of handwork. A good pianist, she shared her musical interests with her son, Woody; and her brother, James Ross. In high summer she thought nothing of canning 20 quarts of green and yellow beans in one afternoon or making 20 jars of strawberry jam from the tiny wild strawberries that grew on the hill behind the family farmhouse. By autumn, her cellar would always be lined with hundreds of jars of canned vegetables, jams and pickles. During the potato harvest Eleanor was famous for the homemade bread, apple pie and beef stew she would bring to the fields for lunch. In her final decades she spent much of her time creating beautiful hooked rugs and needlepoint designs and making Christmas tree ornaments and homemade candy for members of her extended family. Eleanor is survived by her son, Elwood James "Woody" Howard of New York City; two daughters, Barbara Traister of North Hills, Pa., and Jean Howard of New York City; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Howard, with whom she shared a marriage of 56 years. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Interment will be at Hodgdon Cemetery. Gifts may be made in Eleanor's memory to Ricker College Scholarship Fund, care of Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, ME 04730. Online condolences and guest book at www.dunnfuneral.com. I.m working to try and get our 60's people up there. There should be some new faces this time around. If students were there any year in the 60's they should be considered a 60's. A lot of good friends graduated in the 70's that were at Ricker one, two,or three years in the 60's All kidding aside, Joanne and I have met some really great people from the 70's. Lets really make this years the best. We sure are getting old. I really don't know how this happen. It really doesn't seem that long ago we were living stressless lives as Ricker students. I can't believe I'll be married 40 years in August. Time has really gone by. But I never forget my glorius days at Ricker. They were happy days.

Looking out at the Intercoastal waterway in West Palm on this glorious New Years day as I add my name to the growing list of those of us from the 60's that show up for all the reunions. Tim/Meg count me in to lend a hand or two for the gathering. Will start looking up some of the oldiest from the lists I have and get the word out to check this site and the Facebook page. Heading back to MA in 4 days and the winter weather. Dale I see why you make Miami your home....love this weather....Here's to a huge gathering in September

Great to see that Ricker lives. I am trying to find Steve Salisbury, 1964, Tom Jackson, 1964. Does anyone know where they are? Life is great in Charlotte, NC, after my days at Ricker, I served in the US Army during the Vietnam Buildup, then attended the Univ of Virginia, met my wife Claire, and we have lived in NC since 1976. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Len Goodman

As an addtional Christmas present this year, we, Meg Leach and Tim Humphrey would like to announce a 2012 reunion. Plans are not yet formulated but wanted to let you all know that we are willing to help plan a gathering for the weekend of Sept. 7th. This will be a simple get together. Unless someone wants to come forward with tons of cash, we will go with tours of the campus, tours of the town, Ricker Room, barbeque, possible dance or concert. We would like your input and ideas. We would also like volunteers to help get the ball rolling. Hope to make this the best one ever.

Recently I've enjoyed reading the posts written by folks much younger than I am. My husband Larry and I attended RC back in what seems like pehistoric times. (Just celebrated our 50th anniversary). RCI and RC were great schools. How I wish they were still here in Houlton. We have wonderful memories of our days there and we also received a first class education. It's wonderful to see people remembering Ricker and Houlton with so much fondness.

Warren: I never had your father as a professor, but I did take a lot of courses with Dr. Shakir. I do not know what happened to Mindy, but I can tell you this about Dr. Shakir. After he left Ricker he found his way to Wayne County Community College in Michigan where he continued to teach. In fact, I met someone who had him as a professor there while I was in Law School. Dr. Shakir used to call me every year on Christmas Day and we would have very nice conversations. Of course he missed Ricker and Houlton and his old friends (like your father). Because I didn't know your father (I only knew of him) he would mention his name, but there wasn't much to talk about as the conversation would be one-sided. One year Dr. Shakir didn't call me so I called him and got an answering machine. I left a message and didn't hear back. When Easter Sunday came along a few months later I called again and this time no machine or anything else. I continued to send Christmas cards but never again heard from him, so I suspected that he had either gone into a nursing home or had passed away. I never did find out. Not too long ago Ed Malloy posted that Dr. Shakir had died. Good luck finding Mindy.

Wow A couple of times I offhandedly I came to this site and asked if anyone remembered my dad, Shaker Boutros (economics and business) and was pleasantly surprised to get a few emails. I was even more surprised when I checked it out tonight and saw several more posts from students who remembered him. I was just a kid when he was teaching there (born in 64), but my fondest memories to this day are of the sunny 70's in Houlton, small town America as it should be. A few times I tagged along with him to the campus, and remembered seeing students, some of you perhaps, as "grown ups" and hippies, lol. It's great to know he made a contribution. We were (are) Coptic Christians, but I remember he had colleague, Dr. Shakir , who had a friend named Mindy , anyone know what happened to them ? Warren Boutros

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I also never forget that Thanksgiving 1967,Deb. I was close to all five. I remember going to all the wakes that Friday and Saturday with a whole crew of Rickerittes. The last minute,a change was made from my car to the other. the person that lived told me I saved her life for the next two years. It just wasn't her time. We all have a time to go. I truly believe that.Believe me I've had more lives that a cat. This is going to be a rough Holiday season but the grandkids will get me through. Never missed a Christmas with my mother, even when I was in the Marines I managed to get home. All you Rickerittes, and families enjoy the Holidays.

Nancy and Vic your weather forecast seems to be sending snow your way. Down here along the coast we are have lots a rain again. Was telling my coworkers about the Thanksgiving with the blinding snow and how five of our wonderful friends from Ricker lost their lives on the Maine Turnpike. They are always in my heart especially this time of year. Best wishes to all and grateful to have had this long standing connection to Ricker after all these years. Rocky any assistance you need with the gathering in September email me or put a shout out there for all of us to step up. Eddie and Joanne my thoughts are with you and Boom Boom too.

After graduation in 1974 I got a job with a local non-profit and lived in Houlton. I stayed close to my friends at Ricker one of whom was Professor Barry Atkinson who was also RA for Haskel Hall. Barry would generally host a Thanksgiving meal for students who didn't go home for the holiday and one year he and I cooked for about 20 students who stayed behind. Barry made the turkey nad I made the stuffing which was pork sausage based. I got the family recipe from Steve McNamara and it was awesome. So late in the dinner,Dr. Shakir of the Muslim Studies department shows up and sits down for the meal. He begins to RAVE about the stuffing, insisting that he get the recipe. I satrt to tell him - ignorant of the fact that Muslms are forbidden to eat pork - and Barry Atkinson slips behind him and gestures wildly NOT to tell him what's in it. I pick up the que and mutter bread and spices and he continues to chow down. Both of those great people have passed on. I was happy that secret was kept. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Ed
