Will be guesting with Pete and Dolly Roache at East Grand Lake, Orient. Oct 19 for about a week. Sunday we'll be playing some good old banjo music along with piano and whatever for the whole afternoon. Doc Grosser ( talented musician and banjoist for the New England Jazz Band and others nationwide ) will be in attendence. Give Pete a call if you want to sit in ( full and part musicians that is). During the week I'll be there, I'll be looking up old ghosts who attended the college from 57 to 62. I spent an extra year at Ricker as I had faked my death to postphone Charley Heaths nasty letters that I should pay-up what I had owed the college. It worked!, and I became a curiosity when I ressurrected (paid off) from the dead the following Fall for registration. So any of you music buffs who remember us , you'll see some improvement, give Pete a call. r

The last time I walked through the Ricker campus was in May, 1981 as I finished my hitchhiking tour from Boston to Fairbanks, Alaska (where I tracked down Kathy Hill), to Guatemala, Key West and then up through the backroads of Quebec. What I saw then was only a shell; the Commons had turned into a church and Haskell and most of the rest of them were gone! I say let's hook up with some of the Ricker people who MUST still be on Houlton and arrange for a Treasure Hunt where we must find remaining items from Ricker, the town of Houlton, and the beautiful natural surroundings. Say, a sign from the Union, a turntable from WRNE 89.1FM, a 12 point rack, a used ballot from the Save Ricker referendum, a used windshield from one of the sunken cars in Nickerson Lake, etc. I'll bring the Ricker College Catalog that sold me on the concept, the check register from the Class of 1978, as well as television scripts from the news we telecasted. What can you bring?

Hello All ~ I realize it is an awful long way to Houlton for many of you. I attended the CT reunion as well as both Houlton reunions (and have had many smaller reunions here in MA). I had a great time at all BUT there is no magic in CT or MA....... Maybe it's me but once I arrive in Houlton, I am 18 again! The Shiretown Motel reminds me of the dorm and everyone leaves their doors open and go from room to room. It is an 8 hour drive for me and as I've said before, Donna Lou and I rent a car (because nothing out performs a rent-a-car) go 1/2's on a room and spend about $150. a piece for 4 days away from home. The expense alone is a reason to keep it in Houlton. I have priced places around here and they want a $1500. deposit for a hhall for Saturday and another $1500. for a picnic area (and that's without food! In Houlton they know us and they say come up, have fun and we'll settle up at the end.... I have vowed to Rob that I will run this reunion for profit in which case (if it is well attended) there will be enough cash to do a reunion somewhere more populated & expensive. For 2003 it will be Houlton... I am working on July 25th thru 27th! I have many ideas for a great weekend (and with your help Dale), we can make our own fun! Seriously now folks, if you don't go home with your sides aching from laughing all weekend and completely rejuvinated then I will refund your money...NOT! But just give it one more try? I want suggestions on how to make it better. What I like best about Houlton is the laid back atmosphere. I like getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. To go to a casino or Disney would (in my opinion) take away from the whole reunion. There are so many people in those places that we'd never meet up with old friends and I would certainly not have been able to watch the class of 72(?) party till dawn and wonder why my group pooped out before midnight (our kids are still young?). I attended Ricker from 76 till close and it was the best time of my life. My children range in age between 13 to 8 so that it is still difficult to get away for any length of time. About 17 years ago while working at Mass. General Hospital, I was diagnosed with a progressive degenerative neurological disease. It is very difficult for me to get around and still I will gladly make the trek to Houlton to relive a simpler time and reunite with all those that attended College "at the end of the earth". I apologize to those of you that have great distances to travel. We have enough time to plan and maybe can meet in Boston or Bangor and rent a party bus to Houlton!? You have to attend even if it's far away - - - it may not happen again!

What would a Ricker Reunion be without a visit to York's Dairy Bar...or the truck stop (although that has changed!)..or the trading post...and Nickerson Lake. I agree with Karen, any other place would be a distraction to the reason we are there. That is why we bonded the way we did in the first place...all we had were each other! I vote for Houlton!

I treked by the roadside so early one morn, And spotted a Ricker He's down an forlorn He said, "let me be sittin' here in the rain, "Cause the Ricker reuion won't be here in Maine." "So please buy me a case of vanilla, my friend, I'll have my reunion to home. I'll roam through the countryside Mostly alone, But Ricker and Houlton will always be home." So don't take the reunion from Ricker, 'Cause Houlton will always be home.. Twern't the bricks and the boards that made college, T'was the people, their skin, and their bones

Aye, the spirit is in the people scatterd over the land. But when those scattered spirits come together and join with the Spirits of the Place, there the Magic will be. Go to those other places to gamble or visit Mickey or whatever one would go to Boston or NYC (a very very sad place for me now)to do. To re unite with our younger selves, to remember our dreams and perhaps restart old friendships, it must be Houlton. Part of Houlton was always the journey to Houlton, the end of the earth. Those other places have too manny distractions. That was the beauty of Houlton, no distractions. I plan to journey to Houlton next summer to revisit the spirits there, whether or not other Rickerites will be there, time will tell

I think there is no place else to hold the reunion except for Houlton. Does Yale have its reunion in Dallas; does Harvard have its reunion in San Diego. So many of you say how much Ricker meant to you because of the location - so what it's at the end of the earth - it's where it began and where it ended. I know that I haven't attended before and Houlton is my home town, but I don't think there should be any other place to hold a reunion for Ricker except where it was - Despite the fact the the buildings are no longer there, the spirit is!!!

Hi all. Lots of talk of reunion 2003. I was wondering if there would be interest in having the reunion elsewhere, not in Houlton. Houlton, though the home of our memories and friendships, is not the greatest setting for a 3 day reunion. I felt that the current state of the town was sad and sort of sorry, at the last reunion. There isn't much to see as far as the campus and town goes. And it is hard to reach and very far for lots of Rickerites. I think that if the reunion were held elsewhere, there would be many more attendees. The Ricker population now lives all over the country and world for that matter. Even those living in the metro NY area would be more likely to attend of it weren't so far and hard to get to. Just a thought. The last reunion was great and I did have a "ball"! Danced till my feet couldn't move anymore! Laughed until my face hurt and tears ran down my cheeks! It was great to see everyone! That was my 3rd official Ricker reunion, though I can't seem to remember one, my friends tell me I was there, even saw pictures this summer that prove it. I even attended a Kappa Beta reunion one summer in Maines. So maybe you "youngsters" will take these thoughts of an AARP member into consideration. Thanks for the comment that I was "the belle of the ball", really made my day. There were alot of attendees at the last reunion from the years I attended Ricker and I know that they all had a fantastic time. Thanks to the efforts of all involved. Would be glad to help. Lots of love and happy memory tripping, Beachie (Dale)

Alumni would be able to submit articles, photos, etc. for upload on to the site to be viewed by others. You can also do mass emails to all registered members.Anyone care to be an owner/moderator of the group site? Hello everyone! Kim Anderton… there’s no one like you! Every time I give the million and one reasons why I can’t get up to a reunion, Kim reminds me of the one true reason we should all be there. So, I will do my best to go. One thing is sure, everyone who attends will never regret it. The last two were absolutely wonderful! Looking through some memorabilia, I found a few old newspaper articles from the Houlton Pioneer Times. Originally I had only saved them because Kim was listed in the police log (kidding!), but I thought you all might like to read a few quotes… It is always interesting to me to read comments on the closing of Ricker. I hope everyone who was there will remember that your perception of what happened and your personal recollections may not always jive with the perceptions of others. I had my own beliefs then, at the ripe old age of 20, but conversations with Mr. A and many others added much more perspective. In the end, I guess most people tried their best, and the ones who didn’t, have to judge for themselves. Houlton Pioneer Times-The Only Newspaper in the World Interested in Houlton, Maine April 26, 1978 "On Monday, voters will determine whether or not to authorize a $1 million bond issue so the Town can purchase the assets of Ricker College… Ricker officials presented their plan supporting the bond issue at a public meeting Thursday night. An estimated 200 persons were at Ricker Commons to hear the plan, while others viewed the meeting over Ricker television, or heard over Ricker radio. The proposal is for Ricker to sell to the town all property and plant facilities, with the sale price to be $1 million… at the time the sale was completed, the Town would lease the property and facilities back to Ricker…IF the College’s projections are realized, the bond issue will represent no cost to the Houlton taxpayers… Ricker would use $450,000… to pay off State Street Bank of Boston…The College would use $92,507 to pay current creditors in full, and would use an additional $14,493 to pay off it’s pre-capter11 creditors on the basis of 5 cents on the dollar… $20,000 would be set aside to cover miscellaneous costs… and the remaining $423,000 will be used by Ricker to cover it’s the College’s needs for three years… (some) figures (indicate) that will about break even in the third year… enrollment of full-time students for the 78-79 year will be 125 students, about the same as current enrollment. That figure will increase… to level off in the fifth year at 250." Note: I believe there were about 4,250 voters in Houlton in 1978. There are SO many comments throughout the newspaper for and against the bond issue. I will try to get them into the guestbook in the coming days. Oh, if I had only had $1 million in 1978!! Let's get a little buzz on, stroll down to the Temple and watch "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" then walk across the street to Cleale's restaurant for a greasy burger and tepid coke. Window shopping as we walk back to the campus, we hear the sounds of basketball in the brisk autumn air as we past the 'hanger'. Sitting around the reading room at the library, we discuss how this could be the last year for the school but truly believe a knight on a white steed will save it. This almost happened, except the white night was mis-directed an ended up in Whytipitlock and is now selling window treatments and table pads and the Bangor Mall.

It's now Sunday, September 22, 2002, and it's been over 30 years since I attended Ricker College, from 1969-1971. When I first arrived there, I shared one room in a boarding house down the street from the college. My roommate was named Steve Kaiser, aka as "Crash" (from his former football days). Crash was a senior and graduated that semester. When he left, I "upgraded" to the studio apartment on the top floor. This apartment had a kitchen, so I was really jazzed. I don't remember the names of the boarding house owners, but they were an elderly couple. I remember one wintry day, when we just had a blizzard and the streets recently were plowed. The pure white snow drifts glistened in the daytime sun and were piled high along the street sides. I looked out from my top floor window and saw a young woman holding the hand of a small child; they were walking toward the boarding house. I saw them go inside. After a few minutes, I saw them leave and walk away. I then went downstairs and asked the owners if the woman had stopped by to rent a room, because I knew we had rooms for rent. The owners replied that they wouldn't rent to her because she was "divorced." I never forgot that incident and it propelled me into the reality of the 1969 ultra-conservative values of Houlton, Maine. The next semester I enrolled in a drama class taught by an instructor named Wayne Westland. I was the only "straight" guy in the class of about five men and two women. I ended up becoming friends with two guys, named Eddie and Tony, who lived in a really unusual apartment located right above the only bookstore on Main Street in Houlton. They invited me over for dinner one evening and as I explored the apartment, I noticed one side room was a large closet. I asked Eddie and Tony if I could pay them $50 per month and move into the closet. They agreed. I was pretty happy to escape the rule-laden boarding house and I immediately moved. Eddie and Tony often would have dinner parties and all kinds of guests would show up, including some faculty members. It was a different world for me and I enjoyed meeting all these different people. Obviously, Eddie and Tony both were gay, and Eddie totally accepted being homosexual. Tony, on the other hand, actually was engaged to a woman he was planning to marry in order to please his parents who supposedly did not know of his sexual orientation. Tony would get drunk and then become depressed and reveal that he did not love and could not love the woman he was engaged to. To this day, I don't know what ever happened to Tony. I also remember a Vietnam Vet named Tim who was a good-looking, long-haired blonde that all the women admired. I believe Tim recently had gotten out of Vietnam and we would sit on campus somewhere in a room that had a jukebox and where we could buy sodas and coffee. Suddenly, without warning and for no apparent reason, Tim would get up and start twirling a chair above his head. Every time this happened, everyone in the room would scatter. While still at Ricker College, around 1971, I asked my friend, Louis Solomon, what I should do with my life. Louis said, "Why don't you go to California? There's a photography school there you might like to go to." Well, I got into my old Ford window van and drove cross-country to California. I had my bed in the back and an electric frying pan for cooking which I would plug in wherever I could (mostly in the rear of gas stations). I went to that photography school for eight months until I ran out of money, and then I ended up in San Diego when my parents and brother came out from Boston. I have a lot of fond memories about Ricker College and the friends I made there. Unfortunately throughout the years, I've lost track of most of them, but if anyone knows the following people, please e-mail me. Thanks. Whatever happened to: Bonnie Allen, Thomas Chang, Jerry DeWitt, Tony Dickenson, Delores Haramia, Mary Jane Kelly, Nancy Martin, Anita Piela, Louis Solomon, and William Rosenbaum?

It is so great to hear from so many Rickerites. I think this July 2003 reunion sounds great. I'd love to hear from some of Haskell's finest. Dougie, you are right up there at the top. But wouldn't it be fun to see "Crazy" Mike Neill, Mike "Ernie" McNerny, "Tiny" Mike Krystofik, Donny Carpenter, Lance Koury("Beesmee"), Eric Strout, Gavin Keaney, Charlie Moore, "Skinny" Pete Ahearn, etc. I'll keep thinking of names. My brain is smoking on this output. Wow. Amazing. Remember Dana Clare getting busted? Remember the ice sculpture "saloon" and the snowball fight that brought Houlton's finest with rifles cocked? Those were the days, my friends. We need each other, we need to see each other. I'll be at the next reunion with bells on. And in memory of Don Duchano, Barry Brennan, Melitta Henderson, God rest their souls.linda

Hi everyone haven't visited in quite some time. It's nice to see a number of people that I haven't heard from since I left Ricker in 77. The events of 9/11 has changed everyones life, but we cannot let these zealots control our lives. I too had my worse day in law enforcement on 9/11 one of the sergeants on my job was in my office when the first plane hit the world trade center. He stated to me that his wife who was a flight attendant was flying out of Boston to go to LA. When she didn't call her husband I knew it was not going to be good news. Long story short his wife was Madeline (Amy) Sweeney she was the flight attendant who was on her cell phone talking to United Airlines her last words were oh my god oh my god. It's was about 12:30 pm on 9/11 when her husband got the call that she was in fact on that airplane. How do you answer a brother officer when he asks you what do I tell my kids. I don't know what I said but after he left my office with his partner I just remember that on that day I saw a young, strong and confident individual have the life drain right out of his body. WE all need to stay in touch with one another for no one knows what tomorrow will bring. If my path in law enforcement ever leads to a confrontation with one or more of these cowards I just hope in my last breath that I take out as many of these Aholes as I possibly can. So lets get going on this reunion for 2003 our lives have been forever changed, but lets carry on with the great tradition that is Ricker.

Well, Owen, you toppled me over the edge into tears. I guess you are our own Ricker hero who helped protect another's family. I am sure there are others. I think we have to have this 2003 reunion - to reconnect with all of those special people that we knew - those who have gone on and those who are still here and are partying and are anarchists (right, pappy?) Where is Dave Marchowsky? Come one, everyone get involved. we need this reunion

Owen and Lightweight! Wow, what a pair of essays! Owen, thanks for the EYEWITNESS account of 9 11...I was here in Budapest at the time feeling very strange. Being in Eastern Europe while your nation is being cowardly attacked is an eerie feeling. Not knowing what , where or how was un-nerving, never so angry in my life! . It was quite a thing for me as I had been in the Security Business for 10 years prior to coming to Hungary. I had clients in the Towers , even bid on the job after the 93 attacks.Still being a Middle East buff ( Thanks Dr Shakir)coupled with my security career has made for quite a year. I was even on Hungarian " 60 Minutes" as an American in Hungary. What times we live in. Lightweight, wow i actually think of you once in a while. I want that #4 soccer jersey back. OK? If the 2003 Reunion is in July I will be there. Great memories in your piece below, thanks. Cerk

Mr. Hamacher finally got me to this site. I only talk with the guy about 4 times a week. He is the man on writing! It’s about time we have the Ricker Web Site. What a great way to keep in touch. In fact, Gabe Guerrieri now works for the court system of NJ with kids. His brother and mine coach football together in Atlantic City, NJ. His families are great friends. Small world. There are some great names mentioned in this guest book. How about STRETCH? The Gorfman, - well now we know where the boy is, but we need more information. Maybe he is on the Saprano’s. Anyway, Dave H. and I have made an agreement to be there at the 25th in 2003. I just thought I would share with you my experience from 9/11 last year since I was so close to the Pentagon. Why do we help in disasters? The time was 8:49 AM on Sept. 11, 2001. I am crossing over the Key Bridge in my car going through Georgetown, Washington DC. I am in route from my house in Arlington VA on my way to 1850 K Street, my Merrill Lynch office in downtown DC. I am only blocks from the White House. I am on the phone with my colleague in my office on a conference call with MLIM in Princeton, NJ. All of a sudden they tell me that a plane has hit the World Trade Center. Its now 9:03 AM, I am entering my building’s underground parking garage when, BAM, the second building is hit. My timed stamped receipt from the garage attendant says “9:05 AM 9/11“, a receipt of history! I got to the third floor underground. I get to my 7th floor office, which is right near the bank of elevators. I turn on the TV to see the images. Its 9:30 AM and my wife calls. She is hysterical, “Owen, you need to come home now, there is a plane on its way to DC!” ‘ Honey calm down we will be OK I say. As FA’S, were are trained to remain calm, its our nature. BAM, the Pentagon is hit at 9:47AM. I grab my laptop and I am the first one on the elevator, down 10 floors to the basement. Please God, don’t let me be buried in here. I am out, going down K Street, in my car, I scream across the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge towards Arlington VA. The Marine Memorial is right in front of me on the VA side. Not many cars on the bridge. I look to my left and I see the Pentagon. A black smoke, bright orange fireball against a dark blue sky is all I see at the Pentagon. Its now that I wish I owned a gun. I get my kids at school and we go home. 10:10 AM and I call Christine to see were my good friend and buddy Tom is at this time.” I do not know Owen - he is flying somewhere. He has not called at all!” Tom is a pilot for United Airlines. I now know that three United planes are gone. Was Tom on one? “Christine, grab the kids and you are coming to my house now.” We are walking out the door from her house when the phone rings. We look at each other. She runs to the phone. Its Tom, he is San Jose CA. He is three hours behind and had a hard time getting through on the phone. He is safe. “ Owen, we have word that a second plane is on its way to DC, get my wife and kids in the basement now” Tom says. We run down stairs and wait as we watch the news. A fourth plane goes down outside Pittsburgh. Tom was right, but why Pittsburgh? We all gather at my house at 6:00 pm. Tom is stuck in CA, but alive. We say prayers; we pass the fresh pasta sauce and the rest of the food as the TV is on in the background. We all look at each other. We are alive and well. Thank God

I was in tears!! Thank you so much for your support and that stroll down memory lane! I spoke to Dave Gorfman in 1996 when we were planning a reunion here in Mass. He was married with 1 child and his second due to be born the very weekend we were planning the reunion! He was a very successful business man (not what your thinking). He sold/leased/rented video and pinball games. He never could grow up! ha He sounded the same full of life and happy to be alive. I WILL find him again and pursuade him to attend in 2003. I know Jonesy is a lawyer in Branford, CT (big surprise there). I am making phone calls today to see when the Shiretown and Houlton Country Club are available............... I have decided to purchase (with my own funds) some sort of a prize for all those that attend the Friday evening gathering wearing the white potatoe picking gloves that were so generously handed out to all that attended the 2000 Houlton reunion! Dave, I have an extra pair for you for that great entry you submited! ha ha I'll be back!

It would be invigorating to stroll down memory lane after 25 years and share with others who were there how Mr. A. sold me on the virtues of Ricker College during the February vacation week of 1976. To remember how C.A. Smith taught me the virtues of Jonathan Swift in English Reformation and Restoration, and how he also taught me how to shoot skeet on his property over a fall weekend in '77 before helping his daughter Samantha craft the worldwide message to Yuri Andropov before that fatal crash. To laugh with others who heard their private messages over the airwaves of WRNE-FM. To remember how we paraded throughout Houlton on that last weekend in April in the back of a pickup with Poncho banging on the piano keys and a few of us yelling out the lyrics of the Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys. To marvel again how a lottery used to be taken on which day each Spring when that abandoned car would plunge into oblivion from the icy surface of Nickerson Lake. To relive the herculean efforts undertaken to save Ricker from oblivion. Yes, the townfolk of Houlton voted no, and then we lost our viability. I want to see Gomer again and hug him like we did when he reappeared from his lost hunting foray deep in the woods of central Maine. It would be great to recapture the lost camping weekend on Mt. Desert Island with Tony Santo and Bill Papuzynski, among others; how we caught the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain. Is it possible to have another private session with Billy Binford? I'm dying to hear Kelvin Shaw tell me again how I can nimble and I can be quick. Why not try and find John Koller and Don Davenport who help me enjoy communications law, and Bill Turney, the music man from over the border? Why not meet new friends from Ricker who came before us? Can we not salivate at the quality of the food Larry Handsome prepared all those years, and how Gabe Guerrieri always had a smile? Is Giff Stevens still writing poetry in central Maine? Owen Beirne and I ask each other every week, "Whatever happened to David Gorfman?" Can we time the reunion so as to have a bonfire in the middle of where the campus used to stand and marvel again at the northern lights sweeping across the skies? If not, when during 2003 would be the best time and where should it be held? Would Muff and Ross Vincent, or Kathy Hill show up? What about Dougie and Tom Sousa, or Chuck Almeida?Kimbo wants to rekindle these memories and more. Who else wants to help?

A Ricker College web site. WOW. Not a day goes by when I think of my growing up at Ricker. I went there from 1974 to 1976. I was "Fragile" the goofy (dorky) guy above or below "Wheels" depending on your scale. I actually found the college catalog from 1975-1976 while cleaning my house last night. It's is really weird seeing names of people who I haven't seen in 26 years. I've been to Houlton, but since 1995. And I would go to a reunion anywher in the country. Goodbye for now.

Hey Kimbo, Just for the record darlin', I have absolutely NO control over the funds or for that matter any influence either - did not appreciate the insinuation. I know this may come as a shock to anyone who knew me, but in my old age I’ve become fiscally responsible (I know… BORING, but it helps me sleep at night). Relax! Not to shake your faith too much, I still like to party as much as ever (some things never change); the fact is you’ll need about 165 “commits” just to break even. Just wanted to give you a target. I’d really hate to see you take a hit. - Still luvya, - evidently your new "foil" , Fliegs ; )

STREETS OF Houlton Have you seen the old man in the closed down market Kicking up papers with his worn out shoes In his eyes you see no pride hands held loosely by his side Yesterday's paper, telling yesterday's news So how can you tell me you're lonely And say for you that the sun don't shine Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of Houlton I'll show you something To make you change your mind. Have you seen the old girl Who walks the streets of Houlton Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags She's no time for talking, She just keeps right on walking, Carrying her home in two carrier bags So how can you tell me you're lonely... In the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven The same old man sitting there on his own Looking at the world over the rim of his teacup Each tea lasts an hour, then he wanders home alone So how can you tell me you're lonely... Have you seen the old man outside the seaman's mission Memory fading with the minor ribands that he wears In our city winter the rain cries little pity For one more forgotten hero and a world which doesn't care So how can you tell me you're lonely... And say for you that the sun don't shine? Let me take you by the hand, I'll lead you through the streets of Houlton I'll show you something To make you change your mind.

This is what Ricker is all about. I remember the night Buzzy and I were sitting at a table in the Northland writing this tunage. And I am all alone. There is no one here beside me. And my problems have all gone. There is no one to deride me. But you got to have friends. The feeling's oh so strong. You got to have friends to make that day last long. I had some firends but they're gone, somethin' came and took them away. And from the dusk 'til the dawn here is where I'll stay. Standing at the end of the road, boys, waiting for my new friends to come. I don't care if I'm hungry or poor, I'm gonna get me some of them. 'Cause you got to have friends. Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, friends. That's right you, oh you, yeah you, I said you gotta have some friends, I'm talkin' about friends, that's right, friends. Friends, friends, friends. I had some firends, oh, but they're all gone, gone, someone came and snatched them away. And from the dusk until the very dawn, you know, here is where I gotta stay, here is where I gotta stay. And I'm standing at the end of a real long road and I'm waiting for my new friends to come. I don't care if I'm hungry or freezin' cold, I'm gonna get me some of them. 'Cause you gotta have friends, that's right, friends, friends. I gotta me my, I gotta me my, I gotta me my, look around and see all of my friends. Oh, friends, that's right, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, oh, friends, you gotta have friends . . .

Chuck, the campus is sadly gone, except for the rolling lawn. East Hall is still there, Commons is still there, used for different things now. Check back in the comments and you will see. I believe that the old Library was on Pleasant St., then the new one was built behind or in front of Wording Hall, which is now a senior citizen compound.

Hey! Joycie and I are from the 60s! She still looks great-I'm fading fast..HA! Now I'm going through my mid-life changes, new house, new location, new career. As a matter of fact, any of you "boomers" out there who are considering warmer climates for the old age thing, drop me a line. I'm selling real estate in a really beautiful and still relatively inexpensive area of So. Florida, on the East Coast. Can't believe I've made this change in my life (JUST got my license) but love this area and am happy to promote it to all my Northern friends. I saw Kenny Glenn last winter and Joyce Lenas this summer and I'm also wondering where Linda Hardy is!! She and I went to high school together and both ended up at Ricker. Is the campus still there with its rolling lawn? Wasn't there an old house on the main street that we used as a library before the new building? I haven't written in a while but thought I would post this in case some of the older Rickerites from the sixties are reading this. I spent a wonderful evening with Allison (Barker) Bossie and her husband Gary in Houlton. They had invited us because Senait Zerome was visiting. For all those who don't remember, Senait was a girl from Ethiopia who attended Ricker and graduated in 1967 with me. She was also my room-mate for a semester. Senait was with her husband, a civil engineer also from Ethiopia and their daughter who had just graduated with a masters degree from Johns Hopkins. They have three other children and two grand children and live in California. I have an address if there is anyone out there who would like to contact Senait. Feel free to email me and I will let her know. I like reading the guestbook but wish more of you from my era would write. Emy where are you? Love you all, Angie

Hey Miss Ball! We, too, had a really great time visiting with all you guys - Verne, Jean, Linda, Ted, and Kathy! FINALLY, after all these 26 years, I got to meet "Crowley". She's a really sweet person - plus she loves OLD things as much as I do! Hopefully she will come up from the City so we can go to the Brimfield Flea Market together- would be fun! Have a safe trip home - Oh sure, you had to don that Meatloaf shirt after Tom and I left. Hope somebody took a picture. Wasn't that a great concert - he sure puts on a good show - thanks Vern! Jeannie, I'll e-mail later after I get all the empty boxes put away from taking our kids back to their homes away from home - college! Love you all! Tom and Eileen

Here I am in the "Great North Woods" freezing my butt off, a mere 40 degrees this morning. I remember why I moved to Florida. Yikes it's cold! But I am loving every minute of my "Big Chill" week! Nothing better than getting together with my closest Ricker family. Jeanie and Verne have been the ultimate hosts. Kathy Crowley joined us, up from Brooklyn, as did Tom Nixon and his lovely wife Eileen up from Connecticut. And of course we had Linda (Bernard) and Ted Pawlick who live right here in town. We had and continue to have a "ball", please forgive the pun. Today we're having a bar-b-que, maybe Jeanie will let me toast some marshmallows up at camp. But I must say that being together with these Ricker friends warms my soul and it's a good thing, cause it sure is cold up here. Last night I went out and looked at the magnificent skies that they have up here in Maine, nowhere on the planet can they be more beautiful, crisp and clear, if only it weren't so damn cold. Now that you guys know I'm cold, also know that this has been another fantastic week with my dearest Ricker friends. Verne even treated us all to a Meatloaf concert, where he rocked his socks off. He bought me a lovely tank top as a souvenier, as a gift I wore it to breakfast this morning, Verne really enjoyed that! Those of you who actually know me will only have to picture that, to get a chuckle. Where are you Linda Hardy? Thank you Ricker, for friends that last a lifetime. Hope that the rest of the Ricker family is having a fine Labor Day weekend. Leaving tomorrow to return to hot and humid Florida, where I will dream of mornings that dip down to 40! Pappy next time I come up here I would like to meet you, do you live anywhere near Oakland? I love you all, Beachie

Linda I emailed you on 8/19/02 and I just received my email back. Obviously, I didn't get your email address correct. Please email me and I'll see if the address is the same. Thanks. I hope you and Bill are doing fine. The idea of the Vineyard is great but I had said for those of us that are Mainlanders we would be stuck in traffic going and once we get off the Vineyard. It would be wonderful to get together again but Sept. 20-23 is out. Friends coming from Florida and I am going to see my family 10/10/02 to 10/18/02. If I miss the time you are all going to be there I'll just have to hear about it later on. It sounds good to me for next Summer 2003. Why wait now is all we have. Linda I'll just have to hop on the Ferry and pay you all a visit soon. Take care everyone and in the Ricker spirit here's to "One for all and all for one." How about some of us meeting in New York over Christmas and going to see the Rockettes and the tree lighting and celebrate with the TODAY Show gang one of those early mornings? I am ready!!!! Hey, The Vineyard sounds great. Did you say an island... some say Harpswell is an island, we are remote you know. I have a cottage on an island... Chebeague that is. Might be a trip just getting to the Vineyard, I don't get around much anymore. Being married to a Maine lobsterman, we don't go too fah, de-ah. That's why I drive almost an hour each day to sell advertising at the Portland Press Herald, you gotta love it. The 21st is not a good day, my favorite uncle-in-law turns 85, talk about a party! The guy just came back from a cruise on the Baltic Sea. If we keep going at this rate we'll be there too! Who knows what Columbus Day will bring. If we're gonna be moving back into dorms, I want that same room that Joycie Lenas could hang out the window from. Have come back from my New England summer early, as school starts here in Florida August 12th, for crissakes! Saw Joyce up there beyond the tree line and all in all had a glorious summer, albeit a short one. Hello All! Welcome back Linda! I think Columbus Day sounds great (but hell, I think Pappy's road trip sounds good too!) Count me in on both.......ha I've lived in RI and MA my entire life and have never visited "the island". Sounds like a hoot! (In the immortal words of Dougie; "I love these weekends!") Janice, don't take offense to the term "the end of the earth". When driving up from Jersey or further away, I imagine it seems that way. Certainly once you arrive there it is worth every mile. It was also known as "God's Country"......... I have heard the Bove Scandle and that Ricker over extended itself with the building of additional dorms and the library. I'm sure there were many reasons it went under, none of them that it wasn't the most wonderful school on Earth! I have dreams that it re-opens and I'm moving back into East Hall! ha Of course now I need help up the stairs!

Thank you, Chuck. I was totally unaware that Houlton was at the end of the earth - You know, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, which was about 3 hours north of Houlton (the end of Maine, perhaps) has been in operation for many, many years and they still have a good enrollment. I think part of Ricker's allure was it's remoteness - nice, quiet, with elm trees (before the disease) lining the streets. And I happento know that some Ricker students never left Houlton or the surrounding areas. There must have been something good there. I love all my memories of Ricker and my best friends are still those I met at Ricker. I can't think of one person from the other colleges that I had to transfer to that I still communicate with. Long Live Ricker and Houlton

Rockland, ME USA - Thursday, August 15, 2002 at 11:14:47 (PDT)
With all due respect to differing opinions it would appear from reading guestbook comments that part of Ricker's alure was indeed its remoteness from "civilization.." Moreover, numerous other private colleges survived and even prospered in the era Ricker hit bottom...folded...leaving some terrific people with great memories of their years in Houlton and for many an obvious feeling of sadness that it all ended for whatever reasons... I still find it hard to understand why the voters in what used to be a lumber empire would cripple their economic "tree" by cutting off its main branch...while sitting out there on it!! Perhaps the town should have included Ricker in all its community activities and governmental decisions..Perhaps the "townies" so panicked by "drugs" should have grasped the reality that crops other than potatos were being grown in the Houlton area...... Ah, well, just one opinion here but I plan to visit Maine and will trek to Houlton in the fall...have to see it for myself! Best to all,be well. Chuck

Hell, ME USA - Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 13:10:46 (PDT)
The "Townies" of Houlton did not really kill Ricker. Remember, at the time of Ricker's demise, money was tight everywhere. Ricker owed many many thousands to the Federal Government, and others, for the money fronted to build the library. Houlton voters took the fiscally conservative choice to avoid a great debt. On the other hand, while I was there 68-71, there was a great divide between us & them. It did not appear that Ricker reached out to the town to include them (or even invite them) to be part of the activities at Ricker. Ricker tried to remain a small college, not tied to the University of Maine, at a time when the draft had ended, and the number of students willing to travel to the end of the earth dwindled. Just like local Granges, IOOF's, and Masons, if people don't come, the money ain't there, and poof, the business is gone.

Let this be our reunion mantra! Let's lease a big bus. We can drive to Frisco and back playing Time/Life's Greatests Hits of... We could live on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine. Maybe we can get MTV (Music to Vomit) to film us and we can be more then legends in our own minds. Maybe National Geographic would want a piece of the action. Maybe AARP would sponsor us? Tie it in somehow to 9/11? Start in May and end up on Rikers, I mean Governor's Island in the shadows of the WTC in September. All gone to look for America. People could track our progress on the WEB. After the trip we could sell DVD's and maybe even make the trek into an X-Box game. Ed Malloy could sing, "Can't pay my rent, all my money's spent. But I'll get by, cause I'm still fly." (I just added that 'cause Eddy always reminded me of Link on the MOD SQUAD.) What a swan song that would be! We could make a stop at Burning Man, Graceland, and Pedro's South of the Border! We would need a title or name. How about Nuclear Red Bull Ecstasy Measurement of Scholastic Sensory Recall? I know, I'm just a dreamer. Back to the "Real World." Anyone interested in membership in the Ricker College Chrysalis Cryogenics Perpetuity? Love, Billy

Since I used to be a Houltonite, I guess I can respond to what the people were thinking. Alot of towns people thought that Ricker students brought drugs into town. Little did they know that the students got their drugs from the townies, at least some did. Houlton did have a resurgence for awhile and they fixed up Main St. and Town Square and then the almighty Wal-Mart came to town and there was no more downtown Houlton. That was very sad. I think the only store remaining downtown that you all would remember is Town and Country. York's Bookstore is still there are not alot of books, mostly cards and gifts.

I'm not sure it even works, so if someone could e-mail me at that address, I can check to see if mail is getting in. Now, about a reunion on the Vineyard!!! This is just in the planning stages, so anything is possible. How about Columbus Day weekend? The Vineyard is expensive. You don't need to bring your car, but you can, if you can get a reservation. But we can pick you up at the ferry. We have 3 spare bedrooms and floor space and a big yard for tent space if needed.I have booked nothing as far as entertainment, but we're easy. We're the entertainment!! Check out the web site for the MV Chamber of Commerce. It has links to everything. (www.mvy.com). Eddie Malloy, you mentioned the Springsteen concert. I'd forgotten about it and Bill reminded me that we left early because we thought it sucked. However, times have changed and we are seeing him at the Fleet Center on October 4th. Outrageous!! Ricker closed because of a man named John Bove. He was our dean of admissions and he made a few deals and then kept the money and left Ricker quite quickly. There was no money coming in - we had some foreign students who came over and one of Mr. Bove's deals was that they didn't have to pay tuition - we had a "Save Ricker" campaign going but it didn't work. We closed a month early because we didn't have money or credit to buy food, toilet paper, or anything else. During that summer, we tried to get Houlton to use its municipal bonds and buy Ricker, but they voted it down. Something that they still regret, I think. It was a great school -

Well, my third year of retirement ended at the start of this month. It is such a great time of life. Well…it took 25 years to happen, but I think it was destined quite a long time ago. A Fliegel will once again trod across a snow covered New England campus. Number One (and only) Son, Bobby, will be attending UVM in Burlington, VT. Yes, the University of the Green Mountains! I did some preliminary “recon” last June: Girl to guy ratio 55:45, at least 4 good brewpubs within walking distance, three different ski resorts run free shuttles and offer outrageous discount packages, plus the athletic center is fantastic! (They even have an indoor rock-climbing wall). Did I mention the girl to guy ratio is 55:45 and oh yeah…they have a very good academic program too. Chances are he’s even going to get a job (math/engineering curriculum) when he graduates in four…er fivish (what ever) years. It’s just awesome! Lucky stiff! I mean does it get any better then this? (Sigh) I’m thrilled, envious, but most of all sad to see him go. For a kicker get a load of this. He’s going to room with his best buddy from high school. My Ex was complaining about that, “Do you know what it’s going to be like with the two of them together. Rob will you talk to him!” “Err Ev, what the hell am I going to say? (Eh Dave?)” He’s a “chip” Ev; you’re doomed. (bwahaha!) Anyhooo, I heard Matt Ottinger is up in that area. Any truth to this rumor, Matt? We’ll be depositing the boy Aug 23rd. I plan to stick around for the weekend. Get in touch, we’ll hoist a couple. Anybody else up in that area…Ben? – later Fliegs

Greetings to all. It was this weekend last summer that some of the "Oldies but Goodies" from by gone days of Ricker met at my house in Westport for the weekend. Thanks to all of you for three days of endless tales of old and new; with a few beers and great food and of course, the Grill Masters (we couldn't have done it without you); the relaxing days (with some of you driving in wide circles and finally finding Bayside and the beach; to an off the chart dinner at Water Street Cafe with dancing and singing the night away to Louie Leeman and Cheap Sneakers (with Peter on the drums - way to go)and finally from the Grand Pris Master himself driving or should I say flying in his car here from N.Y./N.J. for last call with all of us. I think he should be in the next James Bond Flick with skills like that..... I have been back to party with L.L. and Cheap Sneakers and they were asking for the Gang. Guess we might have to do it here again sometime soon. I would love to see everyone again and if anything comes about for next Summer count me in. I'll do what I can to make it happen. If anyone wants to come here again that would be fine with me. This time I'll have all of the places to see and go to and places to eat at ready before hand (with directions). Fleigs....I'll have to find you a brewery with a Pub on the premises I promise. So to everyone that is out there lets get something going even if it isn't in Houlton next year we can do something else. Linda and Bill are you still thinking about something on the Island in the Fall? Hope all is well with you. I have misplaced some of my email addresses and home addresses and phone numbers. Have a great weekend all and "Here's to the Memories."

Me skate!!! Now that would be funny. No Pam, not me. There was another Jeanie there when I was, 67 -69. I think her name was Jeanie Bock or something like that.

Jeanie Pinney......about 10 years ago I was at a figure skating competition in Rhode Island. There was an ice pro there that reminded me of someone that I had gone to college with at Ricker. I approached her and she had attended Ricker. Her name was Jeanie but I forgot her last name. Would you happen to be the same Jeanie????

I would love to see another reunion in Houlton. I make at least one trip to Limestone each summer for my son to attend Maine School of Science & Math summer camp. We got back this week. I've stayed as a "housparent" in the dorm for the past two summers and love it! The trip up brings back lots of memories. For those who haven't been north in a while...it is divided highway all the way to Houlton now. We saw about two dozen cars on the highway the whole way up. We let home at 5AM and arrived in Limestone 6 hours later. Potato blossom festival time! Would love to see people again.

Well, this is my first message to this site. I, like a lot of you,
have fond memories of Ricker. Jeannie, I think I agree with you that we
would have a hard time walking after a rousing game of Whales Tails, but....I
would be willing to get acclimated again. Cozzolino taught the game to
myself and pledge brother Tincklus (T.Hudak) using J&B scotch. Needless
to say we learned quite quickly. That must be the reason why I have a passion
for scotch to this day. Thank you Jeannie, for advising me about this site.
I look forward to checking this chat board out on a regular basis.

Just on my way home and an ad on the radio was advertising a water
park in NH...The name was Whales Tails Water Park. I immediately had visions
of Omicron and Boom Boom!! Do you think we could still play that game and
walk after???

Hi all, it's been a while since I've written. I have an important
announcement to make. DICK AND I ARE GRANDPARENTS. Richard Alexander V
was born on July 3rd, healthy and of course the most beautiful baby in
the world. We are very happy and don't feel like grandparents at all. I
miss you guys, even the ones I only know through the guest book. A reunion
in Houlton next summer would be great, we would love to help drum up some
interest around here. Would love to hear from anyone, Angie

Hello All! ~ Just got my computer back after 2 months! It fried
in a lightening storm.... I read entries in the 'good book' back from April
through present and am getting anxious for a road trip! I have decided
to see what I can do about a "Houlton" Reunion in 2003. . [Flieg's, need
to hear from you big guy.] Lots of people comment that something should
be planned around here because of the long ride to Houlton! I love the
ride up! Every rest stop and exit holds some sort of memory (picked a hitchhiker
up here, made a pit-stop there, had to buy more beer at that one, lost
lunch there, had lunch here, etc...) I grab my best buddy in the world
[whom I met AT RICKER] and we go half's on a rent a car and room. We Bolt'
to Houlton at first light. Donna & I laugh like fools and reminisce
about years gone by. I swear, by the time we reach Houlton we have regressed
back to 18 years old! If I had to take a spin around town then turn around
and drive back I would have had a wonderful trip. The 2 days I spend renewing
old friendships and having lots of laughs gets me through the next few
years. For anyone that has yet to attend one of these reunions, you're
in for a real treat. I am not exaggerating! Let yourself go and go back
to a simpler time. It’s amazing what this trip down memory lane can do
for you! Anyway, once I hear from Flieg’s I will start making plans. Hope
to hear from you. . . . . . Bev, Tommy, Matt, Seandog, Doug, etc! Have
a great summer and stay safe (we have a party to attend next summer!) Love
you all, Kimbo

Well, I went to Google.com and searched for Ricker College. Very
interesting. I did, however, find the obituary of my former roommate, Nancy
Adams. I did not know that she had died as it had been a few years since
I had heard from her. She died in Nov., 2000 of an apparent heart attack.
She was in the class of 1971. I'm sure many will remember her, as well
as her famous "zebra coat."

Sorry Curt..no can do. Before my divorce it would have been possible
because I had more than enough room. Even though the judge awarded me the
house I soon realized that I didn't need all the room and all the cleaning
so I sold it all for this small condo. Sorry everyone!!!

I just got back from Miami, spending a few days with Professor Danache's
children, Lily and Robert. Mrs. Danache was there for part of the time.
Unfortunately, Ernie flew back to Haiti due to his age and fraility. We
had lots of fun remembering times at Ricker (even before we were students
there) and high school in Houlton. It was my first trip to Miami - guys,
I love that heat.... The central air conditioning was a bit much - For
you Miamians - did you know that Vizcaya was built by a man from South
Paris, Maine? Got back to 40 degree weather at night but there is no place
like home.

Hey, I tried keeping the flow here with my (rather descriptive,
I thought) depiction of thumbing North to Houlton after missing the bus.
Was expecting a comment, or at least some other reminiscences. Spring is
in the air, and I guess most of the alumni are busy with window screens,
lawn furniture, etc. C'est La Vie (sp?)!!

What is going on here!?! I went away for the weekend and the guestbook
took a nosedive! Can we get back to the good old days? Just got back from
(Southern) Maine for the Memorial Day Weekend. . . .for the past twenty
years. . . .everytime I go over that Piscattaqua River Bridge. . . .I roll
down my window. . . .take a deep breath. . . .and the memories come flooding
in. (Of course, my kids think I'm crazy.) My twelve year old has gone from
saying (a few years ago) "Mom, are you going to stick your head out the
window again?". . . .to. . . ."Here she goes again!!" Hope all is well.

Someone out there must have really lived the 60ies. I keep getting
e-mails from Togo and other bizzare places saying that some king had to
leave his office and has millions that he wants to share with me or his
son is in exile and only I can handle the billions left behind. All they
have to do is mail me the check I can handle it. I contacted the FCC about
these e-mails and they said they could do nothing about them. These sound
like something we made up in one of our dorm rooms while drinking and partaking
in a bong or two. Alanna "Ma" Orlen Mersinger

Six people were arrested in South Africa over the weekend on suspicion
of being involved in the infamous "Nigerian" e-mail and letter fraud. Four
of those detained were Nigerian, one was Cameroonian and the sixth was
South African. Police in South Africa believe that the six are part of
an international fraud and drug-dealing cartel, sending out thousands of
e-mail and letters in an attempt to defraud.
