followup to the last message; "Ricker 9473" is a virus. The virus blocking service just received that email, and I clicked the DELETE button. I advise everybody else to do the same, plus any other strange emails.

Sara, do not open that email from "Ricker 9473." It is probably a virus. Your internet provider does offer virus and junk mail (not US Mail) blocking option which has proven to be very useful. I am constantly getting potential virus emails, and I just delete them.

I forgot to ask. I have an email from "Ricker9473" does anyone know if this is a virus email or a good one? There are 2 attachments. I have been getting some very strange emails with attachments and deleting them because I just had my computer cleaned of the KLEZ virus and a new virus program installed about the beginning of November by the computer tech at work. I don't want to chance getting anything again! Any info if that email is good or not would be appreciated. Later,

I have to admit three of the last four “posts” to the forum (not you Smokey) had provided me with some food for thought this morning. I typed a couple different things, but thought the better to post them. However, this might be a little tamer: Seems to me the P.O. Box is a matter of simple economics. 1) Why would you even have one, if you could get your mail delivered to your home for free? 2) If you’re running a business, from it, it should be a deductible expense and hopefully would off set income. I know complaining helps to relieve the anger, but simply canceling sends a better message. Curtis brings up a good point, that we as consumers often take out this anger on the average worker, not the top 5% of the company who make the decisions and get 95% of the benefit from said increases. Now that my son is home for Christmas, we’ve had some intellectually stimulating discussions about economics (since he has completed Econ 101 and knows everything). When he explains how the world functions, it sounds so simple (Why couldn’t Mr. Boutros explain it like that? ;). Frankly, I’d like to find a little hamlet like the one that was so small, when the post master died they shut down the post office (hey – no mail, no bills – that’s a plus). Hoorah for the United States Postal Service! An increase in postal rates always causes irate customers who, for some reason, "assume" the postal clerk standing behind the counter is getting a 'big raise'... In fact, I once knew a customer who asked (when the po box rents increased with the increase in postal rates), if the 'postmaster got to keep the money generated from the increase in box rents'. But how irate does Joe Public get when the price of heating oil, gas, cigarettes or beer fluctuates? Do they piss and moan at the counter in the store as they do at the post office? I don't think so...they simply pay up and shut up! Anyone fortunate enough to live in rural America today needs to pay attention to the post offices in your communities. Your local post office is more than a place to get your mail. The post office is often a meeting place, a place for socialization and communication (maybe a bit of gossip), and even more important, the "identifying" feature of your very community. Without your local post office (and zip code) your community would, virtually, HAVE no identity. Several years ago there was a tiny post office in a hamlet known as Wonalancet, NH. The postmaster passed away; the office closed. People who had, for years, received their mail from that office were forced to choose from one of two offices from which they would receive their mail, Wonalancet being the halfway point between the two. Little by little the Wonalancet zip code started to disappear. Though people still used their old Wonalancet zip code, catalogs and bulk mailings rolling in bore the zip code of the office from which their mail was being distributed; people who proudly claimed to reside in Wonalancet suddenly found their mail arriving with a "foreign" zip code. A few complained, but most didn't blink an eye. And for those who did complain, there was no cut-and-dry answer to why their Wonalancet zip code no longer appeared on their catalogs and bulk mailings. The identity of EVERY community in America is important; preservation of your local post office is a sure means of preserving the character and individuality of your small community. Please do whatever you can to keep your local post offices operating. Purchase your stamps locally. The rural post office is the backbone of our nation. For some of our nation's elderly, the (rural) mailman is their only connection with the "outside" world...maybe the only person they may see for several days...or even a week. Support your local post offices and think about the universal mail service the United States Postal Service provides every American.

Don't blame the Post Office in regards to the KLEZ virus. The deficit was cut in half to $676 million instead of the projected $1.35 billion. Part of that deficit was due to management bonuses which total around $250 million. Clerk's, City Carriers, and Rural Carriers get $0! I can go on, but if you think you are getting lousy service from the Post Office, check out the service in Europe and Canada where a first class stamp is about double the price you pay for a stamp, and they go on strike. Just to let you know, Rob just described what my computer at home is doing so it is going to the computer wizard right after Christmas. But my Yahoo address has virus protection, thanks again to Rob for letting me know that too. Until then, I am not using computer at home at all. Kim, never got my Ricker stuff - I will send you my home address by email tomorrow. Not using PO Box anymore, $60 a year is a bit much.... no wonder the post office is in trouble.

Sheesh Bob, that sucks! That's the new thing with a lot of these viruses - you either have to reload your entire operating system yourself or send it out to be done. I had one (albeit a different virus)a few months ago, which cost me two days of pure aggravation and phone calls back and forth to reinstall my system. After that, I swore never to use the internet without the proper AntiVirus software and to keep it current, (which admittedly, I was delinquent in doing at that time). Not NOW! Someone or multiple people still have the virus and may very well not realize it. They may suspect they have the virus and are just postponing the inevitable of cleaning it up. For a while their system will still function at what appears to be normal. Soon they will start noticing degradation in processing speed, perhaps the system will just freeze and they will have to unplug it and reboot; maybe they will notice warning messages at start up or at random times that they never used to get. All symptoms and then eventually the system will crash unrecoverably and they must have the entire system reinstalled to clean it up, that is if they haven't taken a sledge hammer to the CPU and monitor by then. I tend to doubt that someone is intentionally allowing their system to do this malicious damage just to get their jollies. What a sad "F???" that person would be. If you NEVER open attachments from email, you're about 98% safe from viruses. That's how I got my virus, from opening an attachment from an old friend. Again he was unaware that his system was sending out additional email with an attachment. You only need to get burned once and you change your practices. Some viruses can be acquired just by opening the email. I have never seen anything as predominant as the Klez virus though. It(Klez attachments) still comes to me each day, majority of the time with strange "From:" addresses, so I know its all over. If you get a lot of "spam" each day as I do, your chances are greatly increased that you will get viruses sent to you. - Later Fliegs

Well Art, you can get the complete story by going back to the Ricker.Net home page and clicking on the "Reunions" button. Our much appreciated Ricker "Webster", Mike Varney, has added all the info there. I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but with the combined efforts of everyone involved, it looks like we've put the Klez virus to rest!!!!! My guess was that a number of people had been infected and due to the combined efforts of everyone has killed it. It's been almost a week now with no attached email and I was getting 2-3 per day. Yeah!!!! I spent about an hour and a half on the phone with Ross (boy I'm glad it wasn't my quarter;) and had some real good laughs. He still has plans this summer for a family excursion to France (I warned him not to watch National Lampoons European Vacation!). I know it'll be hard to tear him away from the nude trampolineing, but Ross how much do you think the old "ticker" can handle. My advice is to come to the Ricker Reunion and sit around shootin'-the-shit with some good ol' geriatrics like me. I assure you you'll get into a lot less trouble! He said he'll try... that means he's in - I know Ross. He's also going to call Lance and Larry to see if they'll make the trip. Now Sean's only 30 minutes away so he'll be there, that is if he hasn't been burnt out by the locals! Dude, lose the Connecticut attitude, you're in the woods! Haha! Actually, I'm looking forward to seeing your new digs, so make some floor space for me, we'll be there the Wednesday before. Yeah, me and Johnny Walker! Boo-rah! Hi everyone, As I'm sure you are all aware, I am not from Nigeria and have no relatives there involved in political activity of any kind. However, I do have one small favor to ask of everyone. As most of you know, I've been involved in musical activities of various kinds and degrees of success my entire life. This past week I submitted some of my songs to mp3.com. One of them is a Christmas song that I wrote in 1986 and re-recorded recently, and should do well with a little kick start. At present, it has been moving slowly (ha ha ha) up the charts since it first was available on Monday. You can hear it (and the others) at http://www.mp3.com/Ed_Colton . It should do well, since it's original, meaning it isn't a synthesised version of Jingle Bells with a Euro-dance beat, it sounds incredibly good loud, and, yes, you can even dance to it. I just wanted to let everyone know that I do not have an address book with ricker email addresses and I have done all that was requested and have contacted the company and I do not have a virus on my computer. If you receive any emails from adelphia.net as my email address, delete it. I am thinking that adelphia may have spread this virus because I am hearing about it from lots of adelphia clients. delete that address from your address book. I now am on yahoo, which thanks to Rob's recommendations, it has a virus scan built into the email. I have contacted adelphia to delete that email address and they are being really pissy about it. Remember what bankruptcy can do do an institution.

Great work all of you busy bees on getting the 2003 Ricker Reunion off and running. Kimbo (K-BO) WAY TO GO! You have sparked the fires within again. I am available Kim and Troops, to assist you in whatever way I can after the 1st of the year. I shall email or call many of you soon. I had a death in my Family Nov. 11th in Florida and it has been a trying time and I am leaving again the 18th to go back to be with the rest of my Family. My thoughts are with everyone and know this can be as stressful a time of the year as you can personally make it or it can be a quiet time of reflection and gratitude for ourselves first, and then for Family members and Friends. With this in mind, one unconditional thought or action done on a daily baisis will send a positive ripple affect out beyond us. I have found over the years that all of us Ricker folks seem to have in common, a strong desire to stay connected as a result of our time in Houlton and generosity of heart to all that we come in contact with. From the S.O.S. file: Tommy, I did not send you an email with an attachment – delete it. It’s a shame, but since our virus host has still not cleaned up their PC, we will never be able to “officially” attach any documents to emails relating to the reunion. I had a good long talk with Mike Varney the Ricker Web Admin and he has reassured me the web server is clean of all viruses and agrees completely with my assessment of the problem. Here it is again: Someone who has an address book, which contains Ricker email addresses, has the W32.Klez.H.mm virus on their PC. Just obtaining and installing the latest virus protection software is not enough. You MUST, via your modem, register your product and download the latest virus definitions and software updates. Once this is done successfully, you should run a “Complete” scan of your entire hard drive. Only then will you be sure you’re clean; anything less, and you are still a viable suspect. In the mean time, you can do us all a big favor and delete your address book. If your email system “automatically” adds names and email addresses to your address book, please turn “off” this feature. New Business: Mike has updated the “Reunions” link on the Ricker Home Page and has requested a Word document with the weekend “itinerary” which will also be added. I was going to forward my copy, but thought better of it since K-Bo may have made changes. So Kim, please forward Mike the latest (send to Mike@Houlton.net). What do you mean, “Back the truck up?” “K-Bo?” Well, I thought since Barry Brennan had bestowed the moniker “Kimbo” on Kim a good 25 years ago, she needed an update ala J-Lo. WOW Some names from the past and a chance to reunite. A very cool idea. I seemed to have lost the purple info and registration sheet so if someone out there in rickerland could send me one I would be appreciative. Just connecting to the idea brings back many great memories. I wonder where my band mates are, what was the name of that band anyway oh yea teakwood green Ben Mancuso, Lance Bendictson Bobby Wiliams, Jay Zurek, Doug Senn. Ah the good ol days. Meg Leach just called and told me about the 2003 reunion. I'll be making arrangements for vacation when I get back to work on Monday!I can't wait! What a surprise when she told me there was a Ricker website!30 years, it doesn't seem possible. Marriage and 3 kids later (1 in college in RI), it will be nice to take a little time for myself and see old friends and recall great times. Thanks Kimbo for taking the time to do all this again. A cookout on the commons sounds fantastic! I'll be sure to contact a few more alumni and forward addresses. Keep up the good work. On this Thanksgiving, I am giving thanks that the mailing is gone! ha I was up to 3:00 a.m. this morning scrolling down the guestbook and e-mailing anyone that has not updated me with an address. Kids! I shouldn't have to work this hard..........I mailed 400 out this morning and have another 300 to send by Saturday. If you don't receive anything then I don't have your address! send it along. I spoke with Pat Settembrino tonight (until my phone died). He is on board with this reunion! Things are going well. Ok, I've deleted several emails that are probably a virsu. One from Janice Brown with the subject "WinXP patch" and another with the subject "W32.Klez.E. removal tools." There is another one I got last week that said it was a new game and they hoped I liked it. Pretty sneaky virus to come as the removel tools to get rid of it. Don't open that one!!!!! Oh well, everyone has a delete button so use it. FYI....there are several virus out there that are not attachments and can get in just by being sent. Run those scans often! Hey guys, i went out and bought the norton antivirus software and ran it on my computer and I do not have the virus. but I have received emails from kim peloquin with an attachment and I could not open it and didn't want to. I also emailed Fliegs with my work email that already has the norton virus scan and scans daily that I never emailed him from my new home email address - so what is going on - I have my own suspicions and I will take those up with Kim on the phone. Seems pretty suspicious that this is all happening during the planning of the next reunion.

I received an email today from "Ricker4321" without any @aol.com or@earhtlink.com etc. in it's address and it had 2 strange looking attachments that said it had "frames" attached to it. One of the attachments said editserve2.htm and the other was a "pif" attachment. I did not recognize the email address and there wasn't anything in the subject line. I deleted that email after reading the comments in the Ricker website. I have MacAffee and since I did not actually open the attachments, it didn't show any infected files. The email also did not show anyone's name. So I hope I did the right thing by deleting and trashing it. But if somebody actually sent me a real email that I shouldn't have deleted let me know, just put your name in and something in the subject line that I would recognize. Okay – here’s the follow up to our little virus issue: Since I received another email with a virus from Mike Carlos, I am sure that this “Klez” virus is playing a “cute” little game. Add in the comment by Ed Colton that he received an email from me with an infected attachment and it’s all starting to make sense (Note I never sent him an email and do not have an online address book). Someone who keeps a Ricker email address book has the Klez (official name W32.Klez.H@mm) virus. It is using our Ricker Addresses to propagate itself. I receive emails with this attachment (up to now all spam) to the tune of twice a day. Since I didn’t recognize the senders, I would just delete them. Now it has taken a turn for the worse by including “From:” addresses that I know. I’m guessing that via our address book, this virus has been sent to just about everyone in it. I insist that everyone who keeps a Ricker Address Book get the latest Virus Protection software, install it, and run the online updates to be absolutely sure they are current. If detected (Norton has a nice tool to deal with this bitch) run the necessary fix to remove it. Below, I have included an excerpt from Norton’s virus definition database to explain how this particular strain of the Klez virus is functioning. This worm often uses a technique known as "spoofing." When it performs its email routine. It can use a randomly chosen address that it finds on an infected computer as the "From:" address, numerous cases have been reported in which users of uninfected computers received complaints that they sent an infected message to someone else. For example, Linda Anderson is using a computer that is infected with W32.Klez.H@mm. Linda is not using an antivirus program or does not have current virus definitions. When W32.Klez.H@mm performs its emailing routine, it finds the email address of Harold Logan. It inserts Harold's email address into the "From:" portion of an infected message that it then sends to Janet Bishop. Janet then contacts Harold and complains that he sent her an infected message, but when Harold scans his computer, Norton AntiVirus does not find anything--as would be expected--because his computer is not infected. Klez.E is the most common world-wide spreading worm. It's very dangerous by corrupting your files. Because of its very smart stealth and anti-anti-virus technic,most common AV software can't detect or clean it.We developed this free immunity tool to defeat the malicious virus. You only need to run this tool once,and then Klez will never come into your PC. So I apologize to Joe Cerquitella for assuming his computer was infected. It probably isn’t, but somebody has a sick puppy and better deal with it. – Later Fliegs

Hey folks, Just wanted to warn everyone associated with Ricker Web Site. Today I received two emails that contained the Klez virus. One was from Joe Cerquitella and one from Janice Brown. I'm pretty sure neither intentionally sent me an email. I'm not positive how the Klez virus spreads, but I'm guessing it will send itself based on names in your PC's address books. I'm running Norton AV 2003 and it immediately picked up and deleted the bogus attachments in these emails. If anyone gets email from anyone associated with the Ricker Reunion, do not, repeat DO NOT open the attachments. Kim, if you plan to do any kind of email related to the reunion, be sure to enclose the text of the message in the email as opposed to attaching a word document with the details. There are few things more aggravating then these computer viruses, and there is not a whole lot that can be done about it. Steve Glover has been hiking the Appalachian Trail in consecutive sections of about 100 miles each spring and each fall for a number of years now just “to keep the lights on.”. He made it to Lehigh Gap yesterday, near the halfway point of the AT and about 15 minutes from our house, where Michael and Nancy Nelson and I picked him up and brought him home for a hot shower, a great dinner which Karen prepared, lot’s of beer and wine, a little homegrown, nonstop Ricker reminiscing and an hour and a half of acoustic blues guitar. Steve can still finger-pick like few others. He looks fit and Florida sun-baked healthy and, with his mutton chops, quite a lot like Neil Young. A good time was had by all.

If you have not recently updated with me or at the 2000 Reunion . . .PLEASE, please, please take two minutes of your time to click on the hyperlink below and e-mail me your name and current address. We have delusions of keeping this database current and even sending out newsletters annually! It will take you two (2) minutes to make sure I have your current address and it will save the reunion fund .37 cents and allot of aggravation! Ed, I assure you my computer system is squeaky clean, as for my digestive system, it will never be the same. The worst part of the whole illness was an unquenchable desire for Mike's Hard Lemonade %<~ and I don drink dat stuff afta Laba Day! I'm still amazed Doug that you escaped the claws of the dreaded "Dylan Virus". Must be all that clean healthy livin'! Actually I think that you Mass/RI dudes are immune to this strain and Pennsy/Vermonters aren't. Just look at the statistics. Boy, did I have a “stummy” ache… Poor Doug, The guy’s a saint; I would have thrown myself out of his apartment. Now he’ll probably just have to ABANDON it! When I got home Kim, I contacted the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta to tell them little Dylan is the host and should be captured so a serum can be developed. If you see some strange looking men lurking around your property, you’ll know why ; ) Pam, thanks for coming to get me or I’d still be riding around the town of Uxbridge. Other than the “side effects”, I had a blast this weekend. Since I didn’t get to see you guys over the summer, this was a must trip. YIKES! Rob just left my house. He set me up with this great Ricker database to track everything from "soup to nuts"! We got most of the information and addresses into it. Pat Settembrino - I just called your home but got your machine. I need to speak to you and will definately try again! You can call me at 508-883-9425. But Donna donated a phone card to my efforts so I'll be buging many of you. ha We did have a productive meeting and managed to have fun as well. It was great to meet Pam Gonsalves! I have your dish Pam! I am a bit embarrassed with all the pats on the back. I am loving every minute of this, it is a labor of love. We hope to mail out our big announcement, itinerary, with appropriate fees within two weeks. I BEG YOU to respond at your earliest convenience! We are working our hardest to make this reunion fabulous for ALL! Again I ask for addresses and lists of names of people that you would love to see. I have yearbooks from '77 & '78 and have gone through them and written down names. I am checking names against the file that we have to come up with those people we do not have addresses for. I would LOVE to have volunteers to choose on year and go through their yearbook and write down names of everyone in it then e-mail them to me and I will cross reference and find the missing! This is the most difficult and boring part of the process. I really need help with this! Pat mentioned that the seventies seem will represented. I would love to do the same for 50's and 60's as well. I have Frat lists from Sigma and Kappa Beta NOTHING from "Omicron" or TEP! Who would I contact for those?? Okay people - - - a couple hours of work, that's all I ask? My name is Pat Settembrino and I attended Ricker College from 1968 - 1970. I trnsfered to go to a college in N.Y.C. (Wagner College) where I finished college in 1972. The most stupid decision I made was to leave Ricker early. The two full years at Ricker were the most fun and the most important years of my life. I organized the Ricker Reunion in Vernon Ct. which was very well attended. I attended the last two Ricker reunions in Houlton and if possible will be going up next year with Lloyd Cohen & Mike Reel. We all lived in Ackley Hall with some really strange people and Dr. "A" who was our dorm Head Resident. If there are any people who remember us (me) please get in touch because the make-up of the reunion for next year looks like it is comprised of people who were representative of years in the mid to late 70s. I contributed $ from a Ricker College Reunion Fund which was set up years ago and there still may be a little $ left over to help.I do not have an "E" Mail address so I can either check the chat room correspondence or you can contact me @ (860) 871-2354 eve.

To All My New Ricker Friends......I had a great time at last nights 1st Ricker Reunion meeting. I was shocked that many drove so far (not you Doug..Lincoln doesn't count!!!)They were coming in from Vermont, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.......and to think this isn't even the reunion yet. July should be beyond belief in Houlton. Just to see everyone again would be worth the price of admission. You don't even have to feed me!!! On a serious note, when information goes out about the reunion (watch your mailbox just like you did when grades were scheduled to arrive) please adhere to the schedule for payments. Kimbo is doing an incredible amount of work and we don't want her having to put out money from her own personal nest. So everyone hope to see you in July. And remember we ALL do not look like we did at Ricker but who cares. So we are 30 years older and 50 pounds heavier with thinning hair but we all belong to a social organization that is beyond no other. Kim, thanks again for inviting me. Alana, Houlton now has many more traffic lights. I also took a ride out to "the farm" in Hodgdon when I was up there for the reunions in 1995 and 2000. Both my Marcia( Steeves ) and I are really excited about the reunion. We have made are reservations at the new Ivey's, that's funny to say a new Ivey's, and we are looking forward to seeing many of our old friends.I hope that the brothers of kappa Beta will all come to the reunion. It has been quite sometime since we all have been together and what a better way to see each other again but at a Ricker Reunion.We recently met Jeff Wennar and Gregg Juliano and their wives in Washington DC for dinner. Jeff will be at the reunion and now were working on Gregg. I would just like to thank all those involved in the event of the year next July with keeping the memory of Ricker alive. We all had some great times and made lasting friendships.

Kimbo.... you are absolutely right....this reunion is just taking off!! Last week I received an email from someone who I haven't heard from in 3o years. And today I received another pleasant surprise from someone else. This is just snowballing!! I need to get in touch with you with a few addresses. I'll either call you or stop by sometime this week (you are literally around the corner) Curtis, also great to hear your voice a couple of weeks ago. My reservations are made....some things never change though...the woman from Ivey's was still rude. I laughed when she gave me a wise remark and I said, "I guess it really is true. DUDES, this reunion is getting huge!! My good friend Dave Hamacher has drafted a beautiful article for the "Houlton Pioneer Times" announcing our party and inviting the Townies! I hope to publish similar articles in other "big" newspapers (for anyone that falls through the cracks). I have received many addresses but need more. If you have some and assume we already have them SEND THEM ANYWAY! Many people have come forward to volunteer their help and to suggest ideas! One idea that I liked was a canoe race! My contact at the Houlton Chamber of Commerce gave me the name of the curator of the Houlton Museum which has a room dedicated to "Ricker College". Perhaps we can set up a tour.... Owen, do you think Mort's door will be there? ha Another thing to keep in mind is that everyone I have heard from will arrive on Thursday. . . We can schedule a full day of events on Friday! I will be there on Wednesday afternoon. It's a long trip and the time flies by... With this much time to plan and schedule vacation - take the week! I REALLY need everyone to make at least one phone call to someone they haven't talked to in years. There is nothing that stirs the memories like a blast from the past! Remember, I don't know who you know and I don't know who you want to see! Don't travel hundreds of miles in hopes of seeing "the little red haired girl" then be mad if she's not there if you didn't do anything to get her there. FYI ~ Henry Ivey built a new (up to date) hotel out on Route 1 (the road that the Houlton exit merges with). It is almost diagonally across from the Shiretown (also updated). The old Ivey's is now the Scottish Inn (not as nice). You will be surprised how built up that area is now! I just didn't want you driving around town all day thinking Ivey's was stolen!

WOW! This is fabulous. . . We are going to have a blast! I have Tim Humphrey's band for Saturday night and he promises the new band is better then the last {his son is with them!} Nothing set in stone yet for the Saturday afternoon cookout at the Ricker Common - but I'm working on it. I have been busy this week with my own work and family but will get back to Ricker business on Monday. I am having a reunion planning get-together at my home either November 8th or 9th (which ever day I can get the most people). Please send along any addresses or lists of names that you'd like to see in Houlton next summer. I was only at Ricker 76-closing so I only know that crowd. I have the lists that Donna & Ed worked off in '95 and Flieg's is sending his updated list. However there are lots of blanks! I am willing to look for the missing but I have to know who it is I'm looking for though! For this reunion and future (if any) reunions to be the great success we're hoping for EVERYONE has to get involved! Make a phone call, compile a list, come up with an idea! Donna is doing a raffle and [if all our bills are paid] we will donate the money made to a worthy Houlton charity! We are trying our best to keep cost at a minimum as many of you now have children in college or planning for retirement (as unbelievable as that is!). She was a second "Mom" for many Ricker students , especially in the early 70"s. She loved Ricker College and stayed there until the very end , which was devastating to her and all of Houlton.................Trust me , the town has never had anything CLOSE to Ricker and what it brought since it closed and never will. All; I've been going through more of the messages and some are discussing the college closing. I only wish my father were still alive because he could give you all the direct skinny on what happened. Though he past away in 1976, he had been working with the collage for a number of years. He reported directly to the President and was from what I understand, on good terms with all the management at the school. He, the President and John Bove (Director of Admissions) were all close friends. From a "title" perspective, he was Executive VP. I do recall when I first arrived at Haskell Hall, as a snot-nosed 18 year old, that the college was in finacial trouble at that time (summer-1975). The college asked my father to come up and oversee a number of operations within the college, noted was opening and running the continuing education program. He opened offices in Presque Isle, Caribou, Loring Air Force Base and I believe Millinokit (sp?), not to mention right at the college in Houlton. If I recall correctly, there was also some early shananagins with a senior officer of the college leaving the country with a lot of the colleges monies. Not sure when that was, but it was 1960's-early 1970's. It has been a long time, so not all the detail is still with me. I do know the college President, along with my father and a few other senior managers with the college were continually meeting with the courts to go over the payment system that was previously put in place. The evening program with the revenue it generated, helped the college out tremendously and I suspect helped it survive for the many years it did. Again, there's more detail, and I could write about it for a long time, but perhaps at the reunion. I try and recall the events of those years and I know there was high inflation, intertest rates, stagflation was a new term coined at that time. I suspect the people of Houlton mainly were looking to survive themselves. I do recall unemployment was very high during those times too. We all, who have families and work both inside the house and/or outside the home try to take care of things as best we can. We all have a tendancy to first think of our own children and families to ensure they are OK. Under the economic conditions of that time, I suspect those times were no different. I certainly do not blame the people of Houton for the decisions they made. Again, the economics of those times were very hard. I do know that the senior mgmt of the college met with the towns people frequently. My father belonged to numerous organizations in Houlton, ELKS and others and I believe the Chamber of Commerce. I know that the Ricker College President did the same. My father (Edward Connors) loved Ricker College, just loved it. I can tell you all that because he used to tell me so. The love and admiration that he received from the people of the college (administration and professors) and the townspeople was very healthy for him. He felt the same towards them. My mother, brothers and sisters stayed in New Hampshire and my father used to commute to see them every other week, for a weekend. That was 360 miles, one way. He did that because of the financial difficulty the school was under. He told me it was 50%/50% it would survive... but each day it was getting better and better. He thought that it would be better for his wife and children to stay in New Hampshire at the only house they owned together for awhile longer to ensure there was a home for them if something didn't go right. I guess in some ways that was the right decision since he past away in October, 1976. He was 47 years old. I was called home from basic training and five hours after he was buried, I was back on a plane, back to Texas. My mother had five children at home with her at that time and raised them all after his death. To my familiy, she is Saint Elizabeth. There were countless days that I would go to my fathers apartment, which he shared with John Bove, and find him laying in bed with his feet up on the wall. He had a bad case of diabetes and the 12-16 hours days he put in effected his circulation on occassion. Putting his legs up helped ease their aching. We used to talk about it, but he always assured me that he was OK and needed to work hard for the college, the facilty and all the students who attended. He always felt that he needed to return the kindness he received with hard work to ensure the school would continue on. I'm not trying to make my father a martyr by any stretch, but just to help answer some of the questions that some of you have been asking in your messages. There are always many stories that surround an event of time. Heaven knows Ricker does for me. Ricker College was a big part of my life in many, many ways. Though few in years, those years were massive in meaning. I met so many wonderful people and developed friedships that I still think of today. My wife and I got to know each other better at Ricker, married and started a family. We still laugh at some of our memories from Haskell, the pledging with TEP, the part-time work we both did in town and the goofy times we had at Calebs and the countless dorm parties. I still have a flowering fern that I gave my wife on Easter, 1976. It still flowers ever year and is in our living room. We've kept that fern through our travels from Maine, New Hampshire, Texas, Ohio, Arizona, New Hampshire again, Virginia and back to New England in Massachusetts. Though my wife kids me about "Lidia", it reminds me of old times, good times and times I will not let go. I wasn't aware of any reunions of old, but will travel to any that are told to me. I look forward to sharing old stories and to share what time has been in between. Hopefully, my babbling wasn't too much. Though difficult at times to write, it also was good to let you all know some stories that went along for us all. Take care all. --Mike

Fellow Ricker Alumni; I am absolutely stunned that I came across this website by accident. I was looking to see how I could get my old Ricker transcripts for a graduate program I am in through the University of Massachusetts and low and behold.... Going through the messages I see so many names from the past at Ricker from 1975 and 1976. Tom Souza, Tom McGee, Doug Partington to name but a few. I don't know if you all remember me (Mike Connors).... and my wife Stephanie, but again, we were there in 1975 and 1976. Some of you may have known my father who worked for the college and died in Oct, 1976. Stephanie and I roomed together two doors down from Tom Souza and tecka-pecka-checka. Stetch, Barry Brennan, Eric Strout (of Salt and Pepper fame), Tom McGee, Wheels and many others were on the same floor. Steph and I got married in 1976 and I went into the military (Air Force). I was in basic training when word came to me that my father died. I was stationed in Tucson, Arizona when word came to me that the college closed also. That was another bad day for me. Stephanie and I had such a great time there and we like talking about those days. Remember the raccon I had, found in it one of the colleges old broken down dorm buildings. Steph say's HI too !! We've been married for 26 years and have 3 girls and 2 grandsons. Our oldest daughter, Christel, conceived in the Ricker College dorm is now 25 years old. She's a project manager after earning her A.S. in Electrical Engineering. We have another daughter, born in Tuscon, AZ in 1980, her name is Michaelyn, she's 22. Candice is our youngest and she is 18. Our grandsons are Andrew and Noah. Andrew and Candice live with Stephanie and myself here in Northampton, MA. Noah is Michaelyn's son. Both of them and Christel live in New Hampshire (different households). I work for Accenx Technologies (www.Accenx.com)which specializes in computer systems integration, mostly in the healthcare arena. I do some travling, but not as much as when I first joined three years ago. Stephanie and I would absolutely and most thoroughly enjoy seeing some of you guys both near-term and at this reunion I keep reading about. When is it? Here's the musical agenda for October starting with Brunswick ME on the 19th at the Bowdin college football game. The New England Jazz Band will be playing during and afterwards. Doc Grosser, from Wiscasset is their banjoist. When that gig is thru, Doc and I are going up the Orient (East Grande Lake) to play some more music, including Ralph Bickford on piano through Sunday nite the 20th, for Pete Roache and his American and Canadian friends. So it couldn't hurt to call Pete to get an invite for Sunday. The next musical rush is in Wooster MA on Friday the 25th at the Holiday Inn. A couple of hundred rag-time music lovers will take over the hotel thru the 27th. I'll be on a plane back to Chicago the 26th out of Manchester NH. I'll try very hard to make your Summer re-union! I don't know any of you regular contributors to this guestbook, but I'm sure working at it, that the Summer re-union will be a big sucess if I'm there!!!!!! Bill Moynihan

The Friday get-together is in the evening. The way it has been done in years past is we reserve tee times Saturday morning. I have talked to the manager to tell him to expect the same again in 2003. Just get your foursomes together or at least let me know if you're interested and I'll stick you with a group. I think Doug, Linda Brown, Pete Ang and Ben played as a foursome last year. I know Gomer, Sean Dolomont, Muff, Tom McGee and a few more I can't think of now............all play! It's in the works, we'll have an action packed weekend!

He/She said that he/she spoke to the Pastor of the "commons" ha The Weslyan Church wants to talk to me and is very much open to the idea of "Ricker Alumni" enjoying a bar-b-que in the common area (like Handsome used to do!). I am totally psyched! Just this morning I spoke with Berny Reece and firmed up plans for our Saturday evening dinner dance and exppect a contract in the mail by tomorrow from the Houlton Golf Course to rent their Club House for a Friday night gathering! Now we need entertainment? What do you say Bev?? Dancing girls... What about Ed Colton? Bill Monyhan on banjo!! Allrighty then! Guess we’re not going to gather in Pennsylvania anytime soon. Tsk Tsk…such animosity for our honorable state. However, Mr. “Natch” or should I say …Dr. Evil…I know who you really are! I had you pegged right from the start as a member of H.P.H.C. (He-man Pennsylvania Haters Club). Oh yes! They may be a small, little known, subversive group, but to us Pennsyltuckians they are every bit as dangerous as al Qaeda! Just keep in mind that the Director of Homeland Security is the ex-Governor of our state, so your little group is way up the list of terror org’s. Me too!. I know wattcha mean. Once I was drunk driving with one of my Huggers from Alabama, Renee(I'm a member of "DAMM - Drunks Against Mad Mothers."), we had a pint of Ginger Brandy. We just had pie and whipped cream at Smith's Lunch. We were in my MGBGT. It had about five inches clearance from the hot top. You felt like your highknee was dragging on the road. The snow was deeper than the front bumper and getting deeper. Well, we caught up to a big American car jus' outside of town, and I did not feel like slowing down. I pulled into the passing lane (only the stupid people were on the road that afternoon)(she made me do it) and when I was side by side with the other driver, I looked up at him right in the eye through the snowflakes. Exactly at that monent, my MGBGT started to rotate 360 degrees counterclockwise. I looked at the poor lass pinned by excessive "g" force into the corner of the bucket seat and saw the fear of God in her eyes. I was screaming, "We'll all be killed. We'll all be killed!" Meanwhile, I downshifted into second and torqued the steering wheel clockwise and straightened that little buggy out and I finished passing the guy. I looked in the rearview mirror and he had pulled over to the roadside and was standing beside his vehicle looking at the marks of the 360 and then at us while scratching his head. We made it back to East Hall and... well that's another story

I can't resist a bit of input to this reminiscing madness! So! How are things in Glockamoora? Spelling may be off, but some of you remember the Ricker players. Right Roxanne? How about "Hair", what a memory of interaction. Hey "MA", I think you and I are probably the only two graduates in Ricker history to not have a commencement ceremony because it was just the two of us in December '73. Damn! Got my diploma in the mail. Now I'm an educated finish carpenter in central Maine. Thanks Curt for trying to activate me and I will talk with Karen about the Allagash, which was another "stick with you" memory of the Ricker era. Reminding me of a January term to canoe the Okeefenokee Swamp, down the Suwanee River, to the Gulf of Mexico. That sucker bombed "big time" with it being the first time in eons that it snowed in Orlando. It was still fun though, right guys?! Don't tell me the outing club wasn't active. So many faces I remember but names I forget! I'm up for the Houlton reunion this year! I lived in Houlton until 1980 when we moved two weeks of weather south to Pittsfield. Married Ronda Andrews in 1976 and we have 3 kids, Chris(mechanical engineer for Cianbro Corp.),Katie (sophmore @UMO for Education), and Michael (junior at MCI high school). I tell you, these boys are 6' tall each! I don't know what happened, if there's those of you that remember me! Got to go! Hope you all are doing well! Yes, yes, yes. When I was there (66-68) there were about 500 students--400 male, about 100 female. And yes, Ricker accepted anyone! Several of my hometown acquaintances went there for that very reason--GPA's not good enough to get in elsewhere. BUT once we got to Ricker, the "Houlton Experience" was something to be had. The environment was totally alien to anyone coming from the city. But the great times we had there and the friends we made were something that stayed with us forever, even though the school was shut down, and basically disassembled. This is the first I hear about the school population dwindling so greatly. What was with that?

To Kevin who never made it to Ricker. Maybe it was a good thing you never got there in the late 70's. With an enrollment of 125 or so I can't imagine the school being able to support itself. In the late 60's the place rocked. I think there were 800 or so "students." I use that term loosely as most of the kids there were there because Ricker excepted everyone no matter their GPA. If you couldn't get in anywhere else there was always Ricker. Plus, Nam was happening and all the male population was trying to find a school to avoid the draft. Guess it worked for quite a few. You can still come to the reunion and see what you missed had you been a little older.

In 1999, before there was talk about a 2000 reunion in Houlton, I got the bug for a big reunion. I thought that it would be impossible for me to run a Houlton reunion from Massachusetts, so I looked around here. I've also heard several people complain about the ride to Houlton. There is a nice lake in Wrentham with a banquet hall and a huge picnic area. I called the management and made inquiries. They wanted a $2000.00 deposit on the hall and another $1,500. for the picnic area!!! I love to party but I am not willing to give out $3,500. when I don't know if I will get it back! Another complaint I hear is the cost of a weekend party with Hotels and eating out, some have to get baby-sitters, board pets, etc.... Now if you don't happen to have an understanding spouse, there is considerable contraversy. People in Houlton don't require deposits. They enjoy when we come and visit AND unlike the rest of the world they still trust people! How can you not want to go to "God's Country" where people are still on the "honor system"? I have a 8 hour ride but it is considerably less then it used to be without the 2 cases of beer and pee stops every 15 minutes!! Find a friend or two that lives on the way. Pick them up and the ride to Houlton becomes part of the reunion. When your up there the time flys by and it feels like you come home only having spoken two words to all the wonderful people you used to have as family. At least you have the ride up and back to reconnect with a few old friends! Just try it. If I'm wrong, you can run the next reunion where ever you like and I will help!

Mike, read the previous entries. It is just as much the location as the people. by the time you get out of your car, whether you drive from the airport in Bangor or drive from NY, you will be taken back into time - it will be worth it. hey guys, I'm from Houlton and I haven't been home in almost 5 years, I hate the drive(and it's only 3 1/2 hours for me) but I will do it.

Just returned from a "neighborhood" reunion in Brooklyn, New York and then spent several days with Pat Setembrino and his lovely wife in Vernon, Conn. If you spend anytime with Pat, 5 minutes is all you need, the talk will turn to Ricker. Its been 30 years since graduation, time flies. I tried to get in touch with several people about ten years ago, but everyone had moved from there New York or Mass addresses. I'd love to come to the next reunion. A thought, can we have it in Mass. or Conn. as its more centrally located for most of us. Its the people and not th location, jes? Anyone wnat to chat drop a line. I'm alot more coherent these days.

As a HS student with a passion for Maine, I decided Ricker sounded like the place and I applied in the spring of 1978. I got a call from admissions and did an phone interview and the next I knew there was no Ricker. The last thing I got was a poorly copied list of suggested alternative schools. I was living in Western New York at the time so I never knew what the deal was. Can anyone fill me in?

Just want everyone to know, I am not Mr. Natural. I was teasing, what I know about Jimmy (we did go to the same Houlton High) is all funny stuff and nothing illegal. He did turn his life around and is a good guy but when he covered an accident I was involved in (someone hit me) he had lost his sense of humor!!!

Kim fear not, bring the sign! Who’s this “Mr. Natural” bad mouthin’ Jimmy. Jimmy Skeehan was one of my best friends at Ricker. I’ll admit none of us were “saints” in our often misguided youths (I’ll lay odds that Mr. Natural didn’t sing with the choir on Sunday), but Jimmy turned his life around and made good. He’s a loving father and husband. I had a long talk with him two years ago and we had some pretty good laughs about the days of old. He’s the same “good old boy” I remembered at Ricker, he just has a job to do, a family to support and he’s good at it. I don’t believe he’s a hard-ass, just blatantly stupid people are the ones that get busted. When you think about it, with all that we’ve done in our pasts, we’re still qualified to be President of the US. From what Kim tells me, we’ll need a Houlton cop on duty at the dinner and I can’t think of anyone I’d rather see than Jimmy. New Subject: Friday party entertainment. I knew some guys who could really rock way back when – little old band called "Teakwood Green". Last summer, Pete proved that he can still drum, give Ben a mike and I’d hazard a guess that he’ll remember the words. Smokey’s still in the “neighborhood”; hmmm I wonder if he has his bass and tower speakers. If Lance were to fly in from Colorado, I know he’s capable of jammin’ with anyone. “Voila” – instant entertainment. Plus there’s Ross who I’m still trying to talk into scheduling his trip to France around the reunion. Two years ago, Frank even brought his axe up to the reunion ( I guess I was one of the chosen few who was allowed to strum it – only after I had my hands sanitized at Houlton General – sheesh! Musicians!). Then there is Billy B. as was mentioned previously, who’s been in a number of bands that play in the village. He never travels without his guitar. Not sure if Ben reads this board, but I know Pete does, so Ang call your bud up, knock back a couple beers and toss the idea around. Sometimes you surprise yourselves where it lands. – later Fliegs ;)

Well, we finally have the ball in the air so I guess it's TIME TO ROLL! Great move on your part Kimbo. I'll be in touch with you, Donna and Flieg's. Count me in. I'll start emailing everyone I can think of and pass the word along. Kimbo you came up with the same idea I had about finding a large place for all of us to PARTY the night away. Let's contact Tim Humphrey from the swinging band last time. I have his email and will see what they are up to. I'll remind you all that the OLDIES BUT The GOODIES from the 60's era out partied you all in 2000. Better get those dancing shoes out and moving. For all of those people that have a difficult time getting to Houlton, we'll just have to make plans when we meet in July for a get together a little more South next time. Let's get those emails and phones ringing. I like the Treasure Hunt idea and doing something on the Barbie sounds great. The "Grill guys" know who they are so get those spatulas ready. I like the idea of those that dabble or actually play music to think about doing some jamming on Friday night. Let's make Friday night a Pot Luck and whatever everyone brings is what we have. Kimbo just breathe in and out slowly on this suggestion. I know you like to know exactly what's happening but going with the flow could be interesting and fun, too. Just a thought. When I think back to some of history’s great debates, I recall: “The Chicken or the Egg”, “Lincoln Vs Douglas”, “Boxers or Briefs”, but none is more stimulating than “Whether to hold a reunion in Houlton or some… lesser known locale” - well maybe the Boxer or Briefs issue (especially the silky ones ; ) - but I digress). I’ve debated this issue for many hours with many well informed individuals and each time, amazingly, we’ve always come to the SAME darn conclusion! “We just wasted a whole lot of time, when we could’ve done a whole lot of drinkin’!” With that in mind, I say life is too short to waste it talking. Let’s PARTY!!! If all we had to do was pick a good place for a reunion and it would just happen, then we would have them all the time. The fact is that it takes a person or small group of determined and dedicated people to make the reunion happen and successful. I have personally risked life and limb to test Kim’s resolve. With the small consequence of now having to learn to do everything left-handed, I can attest that there WILL be a reunion in Houlton summer of 2003, as a matter of fact July of 2003 (not positive which weekend???). In all seriousness, Kim has been instrumental in organizing some of the greatest reunions we’ve ever had. Perhaps she has too much time on her hands, perhaps she should find a nice hobby, but that would be all to our great loss. I can safely say that next summer’s reunion will be one of the greatest times of our lives. If you miss this reunion, you better have a good reason. If you’re still alive and kickin’ – You ain’t got one! Still you may ask, “So Fliegs how can I be sure, really sure that this will truly be - “The Greatest Reunion”. Glad you asked.
